ABOUT THE PRODUCER Hacienda La Esmeralda was the first farm to grow Geshas at high altitudes in Panama, particularly on their farm Jaramillo. Geshas, while originating in the Gori Gesha forest of Ethiopia, had been brought to Panama in the 1960's for their resistance to fungal leaf disease. Daniel Peterson started planting them higher on his farms in the 1990's, after noticing their resistance to coffee leaf rust disease.
In 2004, instead of blending them into the rest of the harvest, his team separated the Geshas. The result was unexpected and groundbreaking: a cup so floral and delicate, unlike anything any of his team had tasted before. They entered the coffee into the Best of Panama competition and stunned the world with the flavor profile, winning first place and selling the lot at the highest ever price at the time, $46.20/kg.
The market has obviously changed immensely since then, but the impact of that Gesha harvest created waves in the coffee industry that we're still riding today. Hacienda La Esmeralda remains one of the most prestigious farms in the world, still producing some of the highest quality Geshas, and still fetching record-breaking prices.
